Historical context

Tiberius ruled as the second Roman emperor from AD 14 until his death in AD 37, heading the Julio-Claudian dynasty after succeeding his stepfather Augustus. He proved an efficient administrator despite maintaining a difficult relationship with the Roman Senate. His son, Drusus Julius Caesar, born from his earlier marriage to Vipsania, served alongside him until Drusus's death in AD 23.

Struck at Rome under Tiberius's authority, this bronze dupondius functioned within the imperial monetary system as a denomination valued at two asses, half of a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius. The reverse features the large letters "S C" surrounded by the legend "DRVSVS CAESAR TI AVGVSTI F TR POT ITER", recording Drusus as the son of Tiberius Augustus and naming his second tribunician power. The obverse is accompanied by the legend "PIETAS".
