Historical context
Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus reigned as the second Roman emperor from AD 14 until his death in AD 37, representing the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He succeeded his stepfather Augustus after having served as an able diplomat and military commander. Although his relationship with the Senate proved difficult, he governed as an effective administrator who built up substantial wealth in the public and Imperial coffers before removing himself from Rome in AD 26.
The obverse presents Tiberius with the legend "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST IMP VIII", recording his descent as the son of the deified Augustus. The reverse features a large "S C" surrounded by the inscription "PONTIF MAXIM TRIBVN POTEST XXIIII", citing his high religious office as chief priest alongside his tribunician authority.
