Historical context

Tiberius was the second Roman emperor, ruling from AD 14 until his death in AD 37 as part of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He had succeeded his stepfather Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Tiberius had a son, Drusus Julius Caesar, from his early marriage to Vipsania, the daughter of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. Although Augustus had required Tiberius to adopt Germanicus around AD 4, Drusus remained Tiberius's own son.

Struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Tiberius, this bronze as portrays his son Drusus. The obverse legend reads "DRVSVS CAESAR TI AVG F DIVI AVG N", naming Drusus as the son of Tiberius Augustus and grandson of the divine Augustus. On the reverse, the inscription "PONTIF TRIBVN POTEST ITER" encircles a large "S C". Drusus predeceased his father, dying in AD 23.
