Historical context

Tiberius was the second Roman emperor, reigning from AD 14 until his death in AD 37 as part of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Having succeeded his stepfather Augustus, Tiberius served as princeps and proved to be an effective and efficient administrator, despite experiencing a difficult, resentful relationship with the Roman Senate and suspecting numerous plots against him.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze dupondius represents a denomination valued in the imperial monetary system at two asses, equal to half a sestertius or one-eighth of a denarius. The obverse depicts the draped bust of a woman as Iustitia, accompanied by the legend "IVSTITIA", while the reverse bears a large "S C" encircled by the inscription "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST P M TR POT XXIIII".
