Historical context

Tiberius ruled as the second Roman emperor from AD 14 until his death in AD 37, having succeeded his stepfather Augustus as ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Although he proved to be an effective administrator who accumulated wealth in the public and Imperial coffers, his reign saw difficult relations with the Senate. Following the loss of his nephew Germanicus and his son Drusus, he eventually withdrew from Rome in AD 26.

Struck at Rome, this bronze dupondius represents a denomination valued during the Imperial period at two asses, half of a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius. The obverse depicts the bust of a woman as Salus Augusta, with the legend "SALVS AVGVSTA". The reverse features a large "S C" encircled by the imperial titulature "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST P M TR POT XXIIII", noting Tiberius's twenty-fourth conferral of tribunician power.
