Historical context

Tiberius was the second Roman emperor, ruling from AD 14 until his death in AD 37 as the second emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He succeeded his stepfather Augustus, the first Roman emperor, having previously served as a diplomat and general. Upon the death of Augustus, Tiberius became princeps at the age of 55, proving to be an effective and efficient administrator.

This gold quinarius aureus was struck under Tiberius at the mint of Lugdunum. The obverse features his laureate head with the inscription "TI DIVI F AVGVSTVS", while the reverse bears the legend "TR POT XVII" and depicts a draped Victory seated right on a globe, holding a wreath with both hands.
