Historical context

Tiberius was the second Roman emperor, reigning from AD 14 until his death in AD 37 as part of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Having succeeded his stepfather Augustus, Tiberius served as an effective and efficient administrator, though he maintained a difficult relationship with the Senate. In AD 26, he removed himself from Rome, leaving administration largely to his praetorian prefects.

This bronze as was struck at Rome under the authority of Tiberius. The obverse depicts a laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the legend "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST IMP VIII". The reverse features a rudder placed vertically across a banded globe, with a small globe at the base of the rudder to the left, encircled by the inscription "PONTIF MAXIM TRIBVN POTEST XXXIIX S C".
