Historical context

Tiberius was the second Roman emperor, ruling from AD 14 until his death in AD 37 as part of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He succeeded his stepfather Augustus, having previously served as a diplomat and general. Although Tiberius proved an effective administrator who accumulated public wealth, he maintained a difficult relationship with the Senate and withdrew from Rome in AD 26.

This bronze as was struck at the mint of Rome under Tiberius's authority. The obverse bears the emperor's laureate portrait alongside the inscription "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST IMP VIII", recording his descent from the divine Augustus and his imperial titles. The reverse features an upright winged caduceus, framed by the legend "PONTIF MAXIM TRIBVN POTEST XXXIIX large S C", indicating his offices of chief priest and holder of tribunician power.
