Historical context

Tiberius reigned as the second Roman emperor from AD 14 until his death in AD 37, having succeeded his stepfather Augustus as the second ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He had earlier been designated Augustus's successor following the deaths of Augustus's grandsons Gaius and Lucius Caesar. Tiberius ruled from Rome until AD 26, when he removed himself from the imperial capital.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this bronze dupondius represented a denomination valued during the imperial period at two asses, or half of a sestertius. The issue commemorates the deified first emperor, identifying him with the obverse legend "DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER" alongside a radiate portrait. The reverse depicts a domed hexastyle temple accompanied by the legend "S C".
