Historical context

Tiberius ruled as the second Roman emperor from AD 14 until his death in AD 37, reigning as part of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He succeeded his stepfather Augustus, the first Roman emperor, having earlier been designated as his successor following the deaths of Gaius and Lucius Caesar. Tiberius administered the Roman Empire from Rome before removing himself from the city in AD 26.

Struck at the Rome mint under the authority of Tiberius, this dupondius belongs to a denomination valued under Augustus at two asses, half of a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius. The issue commemorates his predecessor, featuring a radiate head of Augustus accompanied by the obverse inscription "DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER". The reverse design displays a large oak-wreath enclosing the letters of the legend "S C".
