Historical context

Tiberius was the second Roman emperor, reigning from AD 14 until his death in AD 37 as the second ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He succeeded his stepfather Augustus, the first Roman emperor, following the deaths of Augustus's earlier heirs. Although he served as an able general and administrator, Tiberius removed himself from Rome in AD 26, leaving much administrative control to his praetorian prefects.

Struck at the Rome mint under Tiberius, this bronze as commemorates his predecessor, the deified Augustus. The obverse presents a radiate head of Augustus accompanied by the inscription DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER, referencing his divine status and role as father. The reverse depicts an altar-enclosure featuring a double-panelled door and ornaments, accompanied by the legend PROVIDENT S C.
