Historical context

Tiberius ruled as the second Roman emperor from AD 14 until his death in AD 37, representing the second ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He succeeded his stepfather Augustus, having previously served as a diplomat and general whose military campaigns secured parts of the northern frontier. Although he experienced a difficult relationship with the Senate from the outset, Tiberius proved to be an effective and efficient administrator.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze as was issued under Tiberius's authority. Following the death of the first emperor, official issues commemorated his memory, honouring him as a deified ruler. The obverse features the radiate head of Augustus accompanied by the inscription "DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER", designating him as the divine father. The reverse depicts an eagle standing frontally on a globe with open wings and its head turned right, alongside the letters "S C".
