Historical context
Tiberius reigned as the second Roman emperor from AD 14 until his death in AD 37, having succeeded his stepfather Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Born in Rome, Tiberius was designated Augustus's successor following the deaths of Gaius and Lucius Caesar. Although he had a difficult relationship with the Senate and later governed away from Rome, he oversaw the imperial administration and maintained public finances.
Struck at Rome under the authority of Tiberius, this bronze as directly commemorates his predecessor. The obverse depicts the radiate head of Augustus accompanied by the legend "DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER", honouring him as divine and the father of the Roman state. The reverse design features an upright winged thunderbolt alongside the letters "S C", representing the authority of the Senate.
