Historical context

Tiberius ruled as the second Roman emperor and the second princeps of the Julio-Claudian dynasty from AD 14 until his death in AD 37, having succeeded his stepfather Augustus. A successful general prior to his accession, he proved to be an effective and efficient administrator, accumulating substantial wealth in the public and Imperial coffers through careful management.

This bronze dupondius represents a denomination valued in the Roman Empire at two asses, equivalent to half a sestertius or one-eighth of a denarius from the time of Augustus. At the height of the Empire, roughly one dupondius could purchase a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine. Prior to the reign of Nero, dupondii lacked the radiate crown later employed to distinguish them from asses. The obverse features the laureate head of Tiberius with the legend "TI CAESAR DIVI AVGVSTI F AVGVSTVS", while the reverse displays an upright caduceus between two crossed cornucopiae and two crossed branches, bearing the legend "PONT MAXIM COS III IMP VII TR POT XXII".
