Historical context
Produced at the mint of Rome, this gold aureus represented the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire, which was standardised during the imperial period and originally valued at 25 silver denarii or 100 sestertii. The obverse legend "A VITELLIVS GERM IMP AVG TR P" incorporates his adopted title Germanicus alongside his imperial titles. The reverse carries the legend "PONT MAXIM" and depicts Vesta, veiled and draped, seated upon a throne holding a patera and sceptre.
