Historical context
Aulus Vitellius was Roman emperor for eight months, from 19 April to 20 December AD 69, during the civil war known as the Year of the Four Emperors. Chosen in 68 to command the army of Germania Inferior, he was proclaimed emperor in January by the armies of Germania Inferior and Superior, subsequently taking the title Germanicus and defeating Otho at the Battle of Bedriacum. This denarius was produced at Lugdunum, an important Roman provincial capital in Gaul.
