Historical context

Struck at Rome, this coin is an aureus, the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC to the early 4th century AD, valued at 25 silver denarii and 100 sestertii. The obverse bears the portrait of Vitellius alongside the title Germanicus, an honorific that he adopted instead of Caesar upon his accession to the imperial throne, rendered within the obverse legend "A VITELLIVS GERMAN IMP TR P". The reverse features an oak wreath enclosing the legend "S P Q R OB C S".
