Historical context

Anthemius served as Western Roman emperor from 467 to 472, having been elevated to the Western throne by the Eastern Roman emperor Leo I, who ruled from 457 to 474. Issued at Rome, this solidus—a late Roman and Byzantine gold denomination introduced in the early fourth century—features Anthemius alongside Leo I on the reverse, symbolising political unity between the two rulers.
