Historical context

Procopius Anthemius ruled as Western Roman emperor from 467 until his death on 11 July 472, having been designated to the Western throne by the Eastern emperor Leo I after a two-year interregnum. During this period, Ravenna served as the capital city of the Western Roman Empire, where the imperial court had been based since 401. Anthemius's reign in the West was marked by conflict with the Gothic general Ricimer, culminating in civil strife before the collapse of the Western Empire in 476.
