Historical context

Arcadius was Roman emperor from 383 until his death on 1 May 408, ruling the eastern half of the Roman Empire from 395 following the death of his father, Theodosius I. In his time, he was viewed as a weak ruler dominated by court officials and by his wife, Aelia Eudoxia, who was Roman empress through their marriage. Eudoxia, who died on 6 October 404, exerted significant influence at the court in Constantinople, where she famously came into conflict with John Chrysostom, the Patriarch of Constantinople.
