Historical context

Arcadius reigned as Roman emperor from 383 until his death in 408, ruling the eastern half of the empire from 395 following the death of his father, Theodosius I. His younger brother Honorius ruled the Western Roman Empire from 393 to 423 under a precarious and chaotic administration. Struck at Constantinople under the authority of Arcadius, this gold solidus portrays Honorius on the obverse while celebrating imperial harmony on the reverse.
