Historical context

Arcadius was Roman emperor from 383 to his death in 408. Following the death of his father, Theodosius I, in 395, the Roman Empire was divided between Arcadius, who ruled the eastern half, and his younger brother Honorius, who governed the west from 393 to 423. Thin silver coins known by numismatic convention as siliquae had been produced in the empire since the 4th century. Struck at Constantinople under the authority of Arcadius, this siliqua portrays his brother and co-ruler Honorius.
