Historical context
Arcadius reigned as Roman emperor from 383 until his death in 408, ruling the eastern half of the empire from 395 following the death of his father, Theodosius I. Contemporary perception viewed him as a weak ruler who was dominated by powerful ministers and by his wife, Aelia Eudoxia. This bronze AE3 denomination was produced under his imperial authority at the mint of Antioch in Syria.
The coin highlights the empress through its imagery and legends. The obverse presents a bust of Eudoxia accompanied by the legend "AEL EVDO-XIA AVG", depicted wearing a pearl diadem, necklace, and earrings while being crowned by the Hand of God. The reverse features the legend "GLORIA RO-MANORVM" and depicts Eudoxia enthroned facing front with hands folded over her breast, also crowned by the Hand of God, with a cross positioned in the right field.
