Historical context
Basiliscus took power as Eastern Roman emperor in January 475 following the flight of Emperor Zeno, who had fled a court conspiracy. During his brief reign, Basiliscus acclaimed his son Marcus as caesar and later promoted him to augustus, ruling jointly as junior co-emperor. This bronze coinage was produced during their joint rule between AD 475 and AD 476 at the mint of Cyzicus, an ancient town in Mysia in Anatolia, before Zeno reoccupied Constantinople in August 476 and had both rulers exiled to Cappadocia.
