Historical context

The tremissis was a small pure gold denomination of Late Antiquity, originally introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I to represent a third of a solidus. This coin was minted at Rome under Basiliscus, who reigned as Eastern Roman emperor from 9 January 475 to August 476. Basiliscus had previously served as magister militum per Thracias under Emperor Leo I before taking power following the flight of Emperor Zeno in January 475.
