Historical context

Basiliscus served as Eastern Roman emperor from 9 January 475 until August 476, having previously held the post of magister militum per Thracias under Emperor Leo I. In early 475, a court conspiracy supported by his sister Verina forced Emperor Zeno to flee, whereupon Basiliscus persuaded the Eastern Roman Senate to acclaim him as emperor. This silver half siliqua was produced in AD 475 at Ravenna, which served as the capital city of the Western Roman Empire during the fifth century until 476.
