Historical context
Constantine III was a Roman soldier who was acclaimed emperor by the field army in Roman Britain in early 407. He quickly crossed into Gaul with his troops, establishing control over Gaul and Hispania and eventually establishing his capital at Arles. In early 409, the Western Roman emperor Honorius recognised him as co-emperor. This gold solidus, a denomination introduced in the early 4th century, was struck in 407–408 at the mint of Lugdunum, the capital of the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis.
