Historical context
This silver siliqua was struck at the mint of Lugdunum under the authority of Constantine III, within the period of the Roman Empire. The obverse features the bust of Constantine III accompanied by the legend "D N CONSTAN-TINVS P F AVG".
The denomination represents a small, thin Roman silver coin type produced from the 4th century onwards. Although its ancient name remains unknown, modern convention derives the term siliqua from a Roman unit of weight equivalent to the seed of the carob tree, or one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus. On this issue, the reverse depicts Roma seated on a cuirass, holding an inverted spear and Victory on a globe, accompanied by the inscription "VICTORI-A AAVGGG".
