Historical context

Constantine III was a Roman soldier who was acclaimed emperor in Roman Britain in early 407. He quickly crossed into Gaul to confront Germanic invaders, securing control of Gaul and Hispania before being recognised as co-emperor by Honorius in 409. This siliqua, a thin silver denomination first produced in the 4th century, was struck between 408 and 411 at Trier, an ancient city on the Moselle that had served as an imperial capital during the Tetrarchy.
