Historical context
Glycerius reigned as Roman emperor of the West from 473 to 474, having been raised to power by the magister militum Gundobad following the death of Emperor Olybrius. His capital, Ravenna, served as the imperial seat of the Western Roman Empire throughout much of the fifth century. Not recognised by the Eastern emperor Leo I, Glycerius governed for barely over a year before he was forced to abdicate on 24 June 474 and become Bishop of Salona.
