Historical context

Glycerius reigned as Western Roman emperor from March 473 until his abdication on 24 June 474, elevated by Gundobad, the magister militum, following the death of Emperor Olybrius in November 472. Never recognised by Eastern Roman emperor Leo I, Glycerius managed an Ostrogothic threat with diplomacy and tribute before Julius Nepos was dispatched with an army to supplant him. This gold solidus was struck between AD 473 and AD 474 at Ravenna, which functioned as the capital city of the Western Roman Empire throughout much of the fifth century.
