Historical context

Honorius served as Roman emperor from 393 until 423. Following the death of his father, Emperor Theodosius I, in 395, Honorius ruled the Western Roman Empire under the regency of Stilicho, while his brother Arcadius governed the eastern half. His western reign was precarious and chaotic, marked notably by the sack of Rome in 410.

Struck at Mediolanum, this gold coin represents the solidus denomination, which served as the primary gold coin of commerce across Western Europe from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. Introduced in the early fourth century as a replacement for the aureus, the solidus maintained high purity. This piece pairs the obverse legend "D N HONORI-VS P F AVG" with a reverse bearing "VICTORI-A AVGGG", depicting the emperor holding a standard and a Victory on a globe while spurning a bound captive.
