Historical context
This silver siliqua was struck for Honorius at the mint of Mediolanum. Modern numismatists apply the conventional name siliqua to small, thin Roman silver coins produced from the fourth century onward, on the nineteenth-century premise that such pieces represented one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus in value. The obverse features the bust of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "D N HONORI-VS P F AVG", while the reverse displays the votive legend "VOT/V/MVLT/X" enclosed within a wreath.
