Historical context

Struck at the mint of Mediolanum, this silver siliqua was produced under the authority of Honorius but depicts his brother Arcadius with the obverse inscription "D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG". The siliqua was a small, thin silver denomination produced in the Roman Empire from the fourth century, modern numismatic convention applying the name to silver coins valued relative to the gold solidus. The reverse design features Roma seated on a cuirass, holding an inverted spear and a Victory on a globe, accompanied by the legend "VIRTVS RO-MANORVM".
