Historical context

Honorius was Roman emperor from 393 to 423, ruling the Western Roman Empire following the death of his father, Emperor Theodosius I, in 395. His elder brother Arcadius governed the eastern half of the empire, while Honorius's own rule in the west was conducted under the regency of Stilicho during a precarious and chaotic period that saw the sack of Rome in 410.

Struck at the Rome mint, this gold tremissis represents a denomination introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Theodosius I as a fraction valued at one third of a solidus. Although issued under the authority of Honorius, the obverse bears the portrait and legend "D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG" for his brother Arcadius, alongside a reverse depicting Victory holding a wreath and a cross on a globe with the legend "VICTORIA - AVGVSTORVM".
