Historical context

Honorius was Roman emperor from 393 to 423. The younger son of Emperor Theodosius I, he ruled the Western Roman Empire following the death of Theodosius in 395, initially under the regency of Stilicho, while his brother Arcadius governed the east. His reign over the western empire was precarious and chaotic, marked by the sack of Rome in 410.

This gold tremissis was struck under Honorius at the mint of Ravenna. Introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Theodosius I, the tremissis was a small pure gold denomination representing a third of a solidus. Its reverse depicts Victory seated on a cuirass beside a winged genius, supporting a shield inscribed "VOT/X/MVLT/XX", surrounded by the legend "VICTORIA - AVGVSTORVM".
