Historical context
Struck at the mint of Ravenna, this gold solidus represents the principal high-purity gold denomination introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus. Across Late Antiquity and Western Europe into the Early Middle Ages, the solidus served as the primary gold coin of commerce and represented a standardised unit of weight. The reverse imagery depicts Honorius crowned by the Hand of God and trampling a serpent-tailed lion, accompanied by the inscription VICTORI-A AVGGG.
