Historical context

Honorius was Roman emperor from 393 to 423, ruling the Western Roman Empire following the death of his father, Emperor Theodosius I, in 395. Initially governing under the regency of Stilicho while his brother Arcadius ruled the eastern half of the empire, Honorius oversaw a precarious and chaotic reign marked by the sack of Rome in 410. This gold solidus was struck under his authority at the mint of Ravenna.

Introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, the solidus was a highly pure gold denomination that served as the main gold coin of commerce across Western Europe from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. Produced as part of this monetary system, the issue carries the obverse legend "D N HONORI-VS P F AVG" and the reverse legend "VICTORI-A AVGGG", which depicts Honorius holding a standard and Victory on a globe while spurning a bound captive.
