Historical context

Honorius was Roman emperor from 393 to 423, ruling the western half of the Roman Empire after the death of his father, Theodosius I, in 395. His rule over the Western Roman Empire proved precarious and chaotic, witnessing events such as the sack of Rome in 410. Coins under his authority were produced across western imperial mints, including Ravenna.

This gold solidus was struck at the Ravenna mint, featuring the bust of Constantius III alongside the obverse legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The solidus was introduced in the early 4th century to replace the aureus and served in Western Europe as the principal gold coin of commerce from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. Its reverse design depicts Constantius III holding a standard and a Victory on a globe while spurning a bound captive, accompanied by the inscription "VICTORI-A AVGGG".
