Historical context

Struck at the Ravenna mint, this coin is a solidus, a denomination introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus. In Western Europe, the solidus served as the principal gold coin of commerce from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait and title "D N HONORI-VS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the inscription "VICTORI-A AVGGG" alongside imagery of Honorius holding a standard and Victory on a globe while spurning a bound captive.
