Historical context

Honorius was Roman emperor from 393 to 423, serving as the ruler of the western half of the Roman Empire following the death of his father, Theodosius I, in 395. Initially under the regency of Stilicho, Honorius governed during a precarious and chaotic period that saw the sack of Rome in 410.

This gold solidus was produced at the Ravenna mint under the authority of Honorius. The solidus was introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus and served as a highly pure gold coin and the main gold denomination of commerce in Western Europe from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. Despite being issued under Honorius, the piece depicts his eastern counterpart, Theodosius II, bearing the obverse legend "D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG". The reverse design pairs the legend "VICTORI-A AVGGG" with an image of Theodosius II holding a standard and a Victory on a globe while spurning a bound captive.
