Historical context

Honorius was Roman emperor from 393 to 423, ruling the Western Roman Empire following the death of his father, Emperor Theodosius I, in 395. His reign, during which his brother Arcadius governed the eastern portion of the empire, was marked by precarious and chaotic conditions, including the sack of Rome in 410.

Struck at Ravenna under Honorius's authority, this gold tremissis represents a denomination introduced into Roman coinage in the 380s by Theodosius I. Valued at one third of a solidus, the small pure gold coin initially weighed eight siliquae.
