Historical context

Following the death of the Western Roman emperor Honorius, the patrician Castinus elevated Joannes, who reigned as emperor in the West from 423 to 425. Joannes was opposed by Theodosius II, who refused to accept his accession and ultimately deposed him in a civil war. This solidus was struck at Ravenna, the capital city of the Western Roman Empire during the fifth century.
