Historical context

Joannes was Roman emperor in the West from 423 to 425. Following the death of Western emperor Honorius, Theodosius II did not immediately name a successor, leading the patrician Castinus to elevate Joannes during the interregnum. Ravenna had served as the capital of the Western Roman Empire after Honorius moved his court there in 401. Joannes was ultimately deposed and died in 425 during a civil war waged by Theodosius II, who refused to accept his elevation.
