Historical context

Jovinus was a Gallo-Roman senator proclaimed emperor at Mainz in 411 following the defeat of Constantine III. Supported by local nobles as well as Gundahar, king of the Burgundians, and Goar, king of the Alans, he challenged the authority of the Roman emperor Honorius. Jovinus held power in Gaul for two years from 411 to 413, long enough to produce imperial coinage showing him wearing the imperial diadem, before he was besieged at Valentia, captured, and executed by Roman authorities.
