Historical context

Jovinus was a Gallo-Roman senator proclaimed emperor at Mainz in 411 following the defeat of Constantine III. Operating as a usurper against the Western emperor Honorius from 411 to 413, he drew support from Burgundian, Alan, and local Gallo-Roman allies. Throughout his two years of control in Gaul, which encompassed key regional centres such as Lugdunum, he retained enough authority to issue coinage portraying him with the imperial diadem.
