Historical context

Julius Nepos ruled as Roman emperor of the West from 24 June 474 to 28 August 475. Backed by the eastern emperor Zeno, Nepos arrived in Italy from Dalmatia, deposed Glycerius, and was crowned western emperor in Rome. His rule in Italy ended in 475 when his magister militum Orestes revolted and marched on Ravenna, forcing Nepos to flee back to Dalmatia.

This gold tremissis was struck at the Rome mint under Nepos's authority. The denomination was introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I as a small coin of pure gold valued at a third of a solidus, taking its name from that fractional value. The obverse presents Nepos's imperial title with the legend "D N IVL NE-POS P F AVG", while the reverse depicts a cross within a wreath.
