Historical context

Julius Nepos ruled as Roman emperor of the West from 24 June 474 until 28 August 475, having deposed Glycerius with the backing of the eastern emperor Zeno. During the fifth century AD, Ravenna served as the capital city of the Western Roman Empire. The tremissis, introduced in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I as a third of a solidus, was struck as pure gold currency at the Ravenna mint during Nepos's brief western rule.
