Historical context

Julius Nepos ruled as Roman emperor of the West from 24 June 474 to 28 August 475, after invading Italy and deposing Glycerius with the backing of the eastern emperor Zeno. Struck between AD 474 and AD 475, this coin is a tremissis, a small gold denomination originally introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I to represent one third of a solidus. Its mint of production, Mediolanum, was an important Roman city in Northern Italy that had previously developed into an informal capital of the Western Roman Empire.
