Historical context

Operating within the imperial Roman currency system, the metropolitan mint produced coinage under his imperial title, identified by the obverse inscription "D N LEO PE-RPET AVG".

The tremissis denomination was a small pure gold coin of Late Antiquity, initially introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by the Emperor Theodosius I. Its name signified "a third of a unit", denoting its fractional value of one third relative to the standard gold solidus, and it initially weighed eight siliquae. Struck during the late Roman period, this coin presents an imperial portrait on the obverse alongside a reverse depicting a winged Victory carrying a wreath and a cross on a globe, accompanied by a star in the right field and the legend "VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM".
